“The best part of the job is being able to use my initiative. This has included planning trips abroad and alternative education activities that help keep young people active and engaged.”

Meet Grant

Residential Practitioner (Shift Leader and Key Worker), Leicester City

I have worked for Leicester City Council’s Children’s Residential Service for 3.5 years. Having previously had no experience of residential childcare, I started as a Residential Support Worker (frontline carer). After my probation period, I was supported to complete the Level 4 Diploma in Residential Childcare.

I was promoted to being a Residential Practitioner (Shift Leader and Key Worker) a year ago with ongoing discussions with my management team about the further progression I am able to achieve.

Within the department, all my line managers have actively encouraged my progression and training to further my career. I have a passion for working with young people, and this service has allowed me the opportunity to develop relationships with hard-to-reach young people and pass on my experiences to help them develop the skills they will need in later life. The best part of this job is being able to apply my own initiative to create plans to support young people. This has included activities like trips abroad and alternative education activities that help engage the young people positively.
