How I began my career in Children’s Residential

My career in Children’s Residential began after I left university. I studied Criminology and aimed my studies around the disproportionate harms inflicted on young people from vulnerable backgrounds. Therefore, I became passionate in working with young people and making small positive changes in their lives to create fond memories for them to look back on. After completing a job search, I saw Children’s Residential advertised and thought it would be a good opportunity to widen my experience and skill set.

Why I love it and what skills I get to use in the job

I enjoy my job in residential because it is a home from home, creating positive experiences for young people that they may not have had in the past and having fun. The job has also provided new experiences for myself, and I also have lots of positive memories to look back on. As well as the positive changes you can make to someone’s life, this job is flexible and can work around home commitments. It brings a set of new challenges every day, which I believe has made me grow and develop as a person. It involves building strong relationships with colleagues and having each other’s backs through the process. For this job, I believe you need to be passionate, resilient, willing and, most importantly, CARE.

The difference I can make to the lives of the young people and why I find it so rewarding

The young people we have the pleasure of caring for have had difficult childhoods, and I love seeing them getting involved in activities or socialising with their peers. I feel that, as a team in residential, we can make a real difference to the lives of young people by providing a stable, friendly and homely environment, catering for all individual needs and allowing young people to feel secure, cared for and like they can achieve whatever they wish. It is rewarding seeing a young person’s confidence and development grow and seeing them achieve things they would have first found difficult when they came into care.
